The Ref. 3646 Panerai watch with the “HK” initials and “Einsatzgruppe Keller” caseback engraving is in our database since 2005. The initial onion shaped winding crown has been replaced with a Rolex Oyster crown of a different type. CHAPTER IX.I features “The Rösel Radiomir” – a Ref. 3646 / Type C with anonymous “Kampfschwimmer” dial and Rolex Cal. 618 / Type 1 movement. Took a photo of the “Kampfschwimmer” Panerai last weekend (Ref. 3646 / Type D). A watch, used in german missions at the eastern front in the last weeks of WW2 against pontoon bridges of the allied forces.
Starting in Italy, the Panerai made its way (via the wrist of the unfortunate Kampfschwimmer) to Holland and thence to the UK and Nuneaton. After the war, Sgt Rowson passed the watch to his son who seems to have barely worn it.
On September 1, 2018, the German auction house Eppli will be auctioning a never-before-seen Panerai 3646 with sought-after “Kampfschwimmer” (combat swimmer) engravings that comes directly from the family of the original owner. Panerai 3646 Kampfschwimmer Type D Wristwatch c.1943. These extremely rare and historically important timepieces were issued to German Kampfschwimmer (combat swimmers) during WW2. This is a Vintage Panerai from the early 1940's. Approximately 200 pieces of the 3646 were created for the Italian Navy. However, the Italian Navy trained 3 groups of *German Naval frogmen in which some were given a Panerai watch identical to .These pieces were a result of the Nazi occupation of Italy and Panerai was compelled to produce a series of watches to meet the need for a waterproof and legible watch for the specialized German.
