The Mare Nostrum is a true Panerai oddity: an unwieldy 1940s prototype whose later incarnation helped kick-start the brand’s revival, with occasional editions beloved by the Paneristi faithful.
Since then, Panerai has gone on to produce two faithful reissues of the original 52mm Mare Nostrum, one in 2010 and the other in 2015. Bearing the reference number PRT MN52TI, this watch served as a prototype to the 2010 reissue (reference number PAM00300).
Panerai is once again reviving the Mare Nostrum, this time in the form of a titanium cased special edition with a design reminiscent of the original prototype developed in 1943. So named for the Royal Italian Navy’s WWII victories in the Mediterranean Sea, Mare Nostrum translates to “Our Sea.”
Eventually, however, an actual, working physical prototype emerged, made during wartime, which was acquired by the Panerai Museum. It negated the accuracy of the 1993 reimagining. For one thing, it was a massive 52mm in diameter.
