Aurum itself does not tarnish, 18k gold is not 100% Au, it would be too soft to be worn. So the other elements it is combined with, copper, etc oxidize. Hence the tarnish. Also 18k gold tends to be porous, dirt gets in there. I bought an early 80s YG Day Date this week. Beautiful watch, but wondered . The tarnish seems to happen on Rolex’s older precious alloy mix. Only pure (24K) gold is entirely corrosion resistant. Rolex models from the given period use 18K, which, while unusual, can still tarnish. All Rolex Day-Date models come only in solid 18k gold (yellow, white, and rose gold), and 950 platinum. Rolex crown and indices are made of gold, and should therefore NEVER corrode. Gold may tarnish, but not to that extent.
I was just wondering if this is normal for vintage yellow gold day-dates? What are the typical causes & how / would it be possible to get rid of the tarnish? Thanks!
