1. Choose a Topic That You Are Passionate About
It’s a fun task to start a blog. It’s a great experience to buy domains, set up your website, customize the design, and write your first article. But most people quit blogging after just a few months as they lose interest unless you are getting training and have some support.
I will talk more about finding a mentor later and how you can create a website in under 3 minutes for free.
You could talk about your hobby, work, or even a brand new RV that you just purchased. This topic doesn’t require you to be an expert. You need to find a topic that makes you happy when discussing it.
How can you ensure you choose an exciting topic for your blog? Grab a piece of paper and a pen. Start by writing down ten blog post ideas that you could write about a subject that interests you.
You will be writing a mass of articles in the niche that you choose and although you can easily do research to expand your knowledge, you may as well be writing about something that interests you.
If you’ve ever wanted to become an expert in a hobby or business then here is your chance to spout off and not ever be interrupted!
2. Do Rigorous Market Research
Next, you need to ensure that your topic is in a lucrative and large enough market. You can do this by doing some rigorous market research. Here are some ways to get started.
Let’s say you love rock climbing and want to start your blog. You want to find out if the topic is popular enough and how many people are interested.
Google Trends is your first search engine. To see if rock climbing is a topic of interest and how many people are looking for it, type in “rock climbing.” Look at the data, do some more research.
To build a blog that lasts, avoid topics that are losing interest.
Rock climbing is a fascinating topic to blog about, as you can see. This topic has seen steady interest over the past five years and has grown. This will ensure that you have enough people to drive traffic to the blog for many years to come.
3. Pick a Smaller Niche
Let’s find out how much competition there is for your topic. See how many search results are available for your topic by searching Google. Look down the list of articles and look at the name of the authors, are these large companies?
You should choose a smaller niche to avoid competing with big authority websites.
Scroll down to see some related search terms. Pick a keyword ( a question) and then test it to find out how many people search this term each month.
To analyze the search term, visit Google Adwords Keyword Planner
A blog that focuses on “Rock climbing for beginners” seems to have a lot of potentials. It is a popular niche with low competition and receives approximately 1K-10K monthly searches.
You’ll also find other low-competition keywords that you can target for this topic if you look into more keyword ideas. This means that you will have a lot of great keywords for your blog posts.
4. It Should Be Profitable
You should ensure that your niche is lucrative enough to allow you to monetize it and make a decent income from your blog.
You can do this by checking if any businesses or brands are advertising for your keywords. If AdWords is used for advertising products that target specific keywords in your niche, you have chosen the right topic.
You can use AdSense ads to monetize blogs. Selling affiliate products on your blog is a better and more profitable option.
To promote Amazon’s products, you can join Amazon Affiliate Program. You will get a 3-5% commission for each customer you refer to the network, who buys a product.
Write Reviews
Write reviews on rock climbing gear; make lists of the top rock climbing shoes, and link to Amazon affiliate products. This will allow you to turn your hard work into a profit.
After you have chosen the niche, you can start creating exceptional content to help you stand out from others. Keep blogging on a regular basis (3 – 5 times a week at least and every day is better.) It takes some time before you begin to see hundreds of people visiting your site and purchasing your affiliate products. Be patient. You’ll eventually see the success of all your hard work.
If the idea of creating a blog is appealing to you. But you aren’t sure what topic to blog about? Maybe you have an idea but aren’t sure how it will turn out. Does this sound familiar?
You’re not the only one nodding your head. It is the most challenging part of starting a blog. All the technical stuff could seem like a breeze. There might be a million ideas in your head, but you might struggle to find one idea and settle on it, and get started.
No matter what roadblock you have, you can find the right niche for your blog.
A Practical Guide to Getting Started
Now, it’s time to validate the list you have brainstormed.
Question 1: Would I love to write about this topic for the next year?
2: Do you know anyone who would like to learn more about this topic?
3: Is it possible to make money in this niche?
What is the point of a Blog Niche?
Why is this important?
A blog is meant to help you share your thoughts with the world. Why not just…share your thoughts as they come to mind?
The bottom line is that you have to choose one niche. If you offer scattered thoughts about everything under the sun you will never be able to attract readers and monetize it.
If you don’t stick with your niche, the Internet police won’t come knocking on your door, of course, but people won’t know where to find you (other than your mother.) Some people have had success using a more dispersed approach but not many.
This is the main problem most of the time:
You can’t guarantee that your readers will be interested in the same topics as you are.
However, sticking to one topic will guarantee that people interested in your content will be interested in your other content.
What is a blog niche? This is a valuable lesson that you should not skip.
What exactly is a niche?
A blog niche is an area of specific interest that you will write about (or create content on) for your blog.
The problem is that everyone has their own definition of what “specific” is.
You need to know who your target audience is before deciding on a niche for your blog. You should only choose a topic that is popular.
If you were to start a blog about food trucks, it would be more specific. Also, think about your future goals!
Conclusion
If you’re starting a blog, you try to keep your blog name broad. This allows you to reach a wider audience and avoid rebranding. Yes, it is difficult and time-consuming to rebrand later!
This is not a requirement, but I thought it was important to mention because many people don’t think about this until they launch.
Choose a blog name (and domain name) that represents what you are writing about, so it is easy for people to find you and remember your website.

Warm Regards,
Thank you for this practical advice. I have been trying to choose a niche but it is not easy. I first wanted to open a site with everything related to sports. But although I am very passionate about it, it is too broad. Then I figured out that talking about tennis would narrow it a lot. But I am still being advised that it’s too broad.
Hi Abel, I don’t think that Tennis is too broad but if you want to be known as an expert in a niche perhaps you should cover only men’s tennis. There would be a mass of products that you can promote for this niche and courses. You could even promote local tennis in your area to get some sales from traffic this way.
Make sure that you choose a niche that you are super passionate about.
